Your Voice Your Vote
Absentee ballots are central to our voting process this year because of COVID-19. Many of our members (you!) will be applying to receive them. Unfortunately, the U.S. Postal Service is no longer as reliable a courier as it used to be, which spurred lawmakers to devise measures to make sure that everyone will have timely access to cast their vote. As a result of legislation signed into law yesterday, voters in New York State can apply for absentee ballots RIGHT NOW.
The three measures are:
- Absentee ballot applications can be submitted to the Board of Elections immediately;
- Accepted reasons for requesting an absentee ballot now include risk or fear of illness including COVID-19;
- All absentee ballots postmarked on or before Election Day, or received by the Board of Elections without a postmark on the day after the election will be counted. Ballots with a postmark on or before Election Day will be counted if received by November 10.
